What is a porcelain crown (porcelain cap)?

A porcelain crown is a tooth-colored covering that is custom made for each individual patient. It encases the entire surface of your tooth, which restores it to its original shape and natural size. Crowns strengthen and protect teeth that are unable to be restored with other kinds of restorations, such as fillings. They are an ideal solution for teeth that have broken or fractured fillings, large defective fillings, and also for teeth that are decaying or have suffered a trauma of some sort. Porcelain crowns are one of the most popular types of fillings because they resemble your natural teeth.

What are the benefits of porcelain crowns?

A tooth that has been structurally weakened by decay or has been cracked can be extremely painful. Both of the aforementioned issues can also jeopardize the tooth itself and lead to a variety of other, more serious dental issues. Porcelain dental crowns support the tooth, thereby eliminating the pain and discomfort that is commonly associated with a cavity or fractured filling, and prevents the problem from becoming exacerbated.

What Dental issues can porcelain crown restorations treat?

Onlay restorations can remedy a variety of dental problems, here are just a few:

*Broken or fractured teeth.

*Cosmetic enhancement.

*Fractured fillings.

*Large fillings.

If your particular dental issue is not listed above, please contact the West Los Angeles dental offices of Larry Picard, DDS to see if onlay restorations may be an ideal solution, or to find out more about other alternative dental treatments that can help to give you a stunning, bright smile.

What does the onlay restoration process involve?

You will typically only need to make two appointments to complete the porcelain crown treatment process. During your initial visit, the dentist will assess the extent of damage to the tooth and will get the tooth ready for the porcelain dental crown. A mold of your tooth will be taken, and sent off to the lab where the permanent porcelain crown will be created. As the crown is being made, a temporary crown will be put be placed on the tooth. When the permanent crown is completed by the lab, you will come back for a second appointment, where the porcelain cap will be cemented onto the tooth.
